Amazon said it fixed the issue within four hours.ĪWS is the market leader in the cloud arena, and its customers include some of the world’s biggest businesses and organizations, such as Netflix, Coca-Cola and government agencies. The conference, though, was overshadowed on Tuesday afternoon when an AWS outage hampered the ability of many customers to operate their sites. The meeting is one of several big events Amazon hosts annually to tout its cloud offerings to its clients or other companies that might be interested in storing their data on its vast network of servers around the world. It is under those circumstances that AWS held its two-day security-focused cloud conference Tuesday in Anaheim, California. ![]() The tech giant’s first quarter earnings report showed its cloud unit generated $21.4 billion and was growing at 16% in the first three months of this year - much slower than the 37% growth rate a year prior. And many of them are being more cautious about their cloud costs, leading to a slowdown in one of Amazon’s profitable businesses. Now even the lucrative cloud services business is feeling pressure.Ĭompanies are trimming their expenses amid concerns about high inflation and fears that a recession might be around the corner. But even when those lockdowns eventually lifted and Amazon’s sales slowed as people returned to stores, the company could still count on its massive cash cow: Amazon Web Services. The convergence of office and warehouse workers on climate change issues reveals the core of the growing backlash against Amazon: Not just the struggle for a pay raise, but also for an end to corporate impunity.NEW YORK (AP) - When the pandemic hit three years ago, Amazon was one of the few businesses that thrived.Ĭustomers flocked to the online commerce site amid global lockdowns. That means t ackling the racial and economic inequities that overlay the climate crisis in poor and marginalized communities. Thousands of Amazon employees have signed a letter urging the company to pursue not just a promise for reduced emissions and a sprinkling of solar panels on warehouses, but a real climate justice agenda. And today, climate intersects with the Shakopee strike in a different way: Some of Amazon’s tech employees traveled from Seattle to join the Shakopee workers to protest the company’s climate policy, which they say is wholly inadequate in light of the company’s massive wealth and gargantuan carbon footprint. In 2011, sweltering temperatures at a Pennsylvania warehouse led to workers collapsing from heat stress. ![]() The dehumanizing climate at Amazon facilities is often also aggravated by the actual climate. Amazon agreed to talk with workers about reforming some of their labor practices, but the workers still say they face unbearable pressure on the job. Last year at Shakopee, they campaigned for religious accommodations, such as a dedicated prayer space for Muslims and a reduction of their bone-crunching workload during their Ramadan fast. Workers complain that the hourly production quotas haunt them even during meal and rest breaks, leaving many with chronic stress. They say Amazon is a uniquely brutal boss: Their performance is constantly monitored and managers issue warnings to ensure that workers don’t stray from their regimen. The workers at Shakopee and elsewhere have long complained of being worked to exhaustion under strict production quotas - typically requiring workers to package hundreds of items per hour on long shifts. They were joined by labor unions who hope to organize the massive warehouse workforce across the country, as well as thousands of protesting workers in Europe who are also mobilizing for fair working conditions across Amazon's global e-commerce hegemonic presence. ![]()
